Start menu icons missing

January 18, 2012

Not only can the folders in the start menu say they are empty, but the icons (computer, pictures, music, videos, etc….) can be missing. When you go to the start menu and right click on the orb / windows icon, you select properties. Then you select custom. If you select defaults, it still doesnt work. Thats because they change the registry keys for them. Here is how to fix.

There are two ways to fix this.

1. Click on the start menu then right click on it and select properties. Make sure both boxes under privacy are checked and then click customize. Display anything you want displayed as a link.

2. Pick your OS and copy and paste the following code into notepad and save the following as anything.reg.

Run it and then log off the account or restart. This should fix your issues.
