Print Spooler service will not start, Error 1709, Service cannot start

February 13, 2012

I have run into this a few times. When you try to start the spooler service you get an error about it not being able to start. All and all it turns out that it is a problem with the dpenedency. The genetlemens computer i was working on had ‘HP’ in the dependency in the registry…..obviously not correct. Here is what you should do.

*The fix* Automatic

1. Save this into notepad as anything.bat and then run it. This should clear up the issue.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; REGEDIT.EXE /S “%~f0”

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

*the fix* Manual

1. Go to the start menu and type regedit and open the registry.

2. Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler]

3. Look for the key named ‘depend on service’ and make sure it says RPCSS

4. If it says anything else in the box, just delete it and replace it with RPCSS

5. Restart the PC and you should be good to go.
