Missing operating system (vista, xp, 7)

April 11, 2012

Sometimes it’s the simple fixes that make things so much better.

When you boot the computer and you get an error that states “missing operating system”, you start to panic. Remian calm, most of the time it is something stupid.

1. Check to make sure the Hard drive is plugged in (i did say simple above right?……)

2. Make sure the bios can see the hard drive. (if not and the raid/ahci/combo is set correctly, you probably have a bad hard drive) <typically not the case because a different error would pop.

3. Check the boot order. Set it back to defaults.

4. Make sure that there is not a flash drive. Alot of times people here at work leave flash drives in and have the bios set to boot from an external device before the hard drive. This is indeed what happened to me this morning.

If i come across anything else it could be i will let you know. Good luck and as always enjoy.
