Right click / Context menu doesn’t show the open link

July 20, 2012

I recently had someone ask me if there was a way to fix this issue. They had told me that when they right click on an icon to launch a program, they dont get the open link. I had never seen it before but had a good idea of where the issue was. I knew the registry was the issue and i had a good idea of which keys it would have to be under (.lnk). I started looking around and deleted some of the keys on my own computer, until i had made the OPEN link in the context menu go missing. Here is the fix for it.

I also discovered that if you are missing some of these registry components, when you go to the start menu and try and click on a shortcut to launch the application, it will not load. Unlike one of my previous posts where an “open with” menu comes up and the computer doesnt know what to use to open it, this makes it so it wont even launch.

I tried to run fix.reg and got: Cannot import C:\Document and Settings\owner\desktop\fix.reg:The specified file is not a registry script. you can only input binary registry files from within the registry editor. Thanks!
